VIRTUOUS WOMEN, 2020

Three women in a slave-like setting, forced to sit in a row and squeeze lemons with their mouths. It seems both illogical and distressing – since using their hands would be both more practical and less painful.

 

They are naked and vulnerable but continue their task without question. They are virtuous women, doing what is expected of them. The lemons symbolize fidelity – be it to traditions, expectations or others. All of these can be both suffocating, bitter and disappointing – the painting is a reminder of this.
