THE PLEASER, 2020
Oil on canvas, 50x70cm
’The Pleaser’ centres on a human in an empty blueish universe, unaffected by the whole milk that is being poured onto it. The sweet, fatty whole milk symbolizes the denial of the person’s needs and boundaries, while the androgynous nature of the human expresses the universality of self-neglect.
The aim is to portray the compulsive thought of having to cover yourself in a varnish of sweetness, never to say no or stand up for yourself, lest you will alienate your surroundings – and to make the viewer question whether or not they’re true to themselves in their relations.
